About San Juan la Laguna

Lake Atitlán, considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, shelters San Juan la Laguna, where the Tz´utujil people live, between its many hills and mountains. Ancestral traditions and one-of-a-kind natural marvels have been conserved here for many years. San Juan la Laguna is considered the cleanest town around the lake, making its most striking characteristic its urban image.

Descendants of the Maya ethnicity Tz´utujil (Flower of milapa) call San Juan la Laguna their home. This town is special for how its population lives in harmony with nature. Far from being considered a tourist site, San Juan La Laguna is the ideal place for those that want to escape from the noise and hassle of the city and enjoy the harmony of nature offered by this small town and it´s friendly people.

How to get to San Juan

To get to San Juan la Laguna take a boat in Panajachel from the Tzanjuyú dock.

To arrive by land, follow the inter-American highway, pass through Los Encuentros, take the road to Quetzaltenango, cross to the left at the Km 148 marker and begin to descend the mountain until you arrive at San Juan la Laguna. All the road is paved.

  • Local women make all crafts so when you buy a product made in San Juan la Laguna, you are not only acquiring a high quality product, but also supporting the women's groups and their families. 
  • To make your experience unique, we recommend contacting community organizations to stay with a local family and / or enjoy a delicious traditional dish.
