Customs, legends, and popular history are recurring themes in the paintings of oil painters in San Juan la Laguna. We paint colorful landscapes that reflect the natural beauty and everyday scenes of our town. Proudly, we are self-taught artists. Therefore our artwork is spontaneous.
We artists were driven by a dream to share our art with other cultures. For that reason we founded the Maya Xocomeel Art Association in 2001. Thanks to the union of our individual efforts, we now export paintings to reach a wider market.
Currently, we have five community galleries to exhibit our paintings. In our galleries you will find artwork by both men and women. The paintings in the galleries are both unique and of high quality. Our artwork is full of light with varying colors that capture the bright and contrasting fabrics typical of Guatemala. Our paintings give value to Tz'utujil Mayan culture because it preserves the cultural traditions of our people, our identity for future generations.
Several of our artists have participated in national and international exhibitions and received awards in recognition for their work.
Throughout the town you will see a series of murals that depict our mysterious past. These are one result of the many initiatives led by the Xokomeel Association. In these murals we seek to represent the relationship between man and the universe from the perspective of ancient Mayan traditions.
